South Middle School will present the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” on Thursday, March 21 and Friday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. All performances will take place in the school auditorium, 349 Lakeville Road.

Touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth, and honesty, “Fiddler on the Roof” is a staple of the musical theatre catalog. Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values as they grow up and fall in love in a time of extraordinary change. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, this musical’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy, and sadness.

Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, “Fiddler on the Roof” is the brainchild of Broadway legends Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince; songwriters Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick; and bookwriter Joseph Stein. The musical features such iconic songs as the beautiful “Sunrise, Sunset,” the boisterous “If I Were a Rich Man,” and the classic “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.”

This production will be under the direction of Gabriel Carras, English department head at South Middle School. Tickets are $10. For additional information, please call (516) 441-4600.
