The Great Neck South Lady Rebels defeated the Sewanhaka Lady Indians 10-5 in lacrosse on Friday afternoon, led by Danielle DelPonte’s seven-point game.
DelPonte recorded five goals and two assists while Hannah Lee added a goal and two assists for Great Neck South.
Jordana Ovadia scored twice while goalkeeper Rebecca Bressler stopped eight shots for Great Neck South.
Kylie Woo and Arianna Vandezande led Sewanhaka with two goals each while goalkeeper Jennifer Alvarenga made nine saves.
Great Neck South head coach Kathleen Davis said they kept Sewanhaka’s top players in check and improved their play on the ground.
“We knew who Sewanhaka’s key players were,” Davis said. “We knew wherever they were, we needed our girls to stay on them. We focused on ground balls for the last two two days and I’m very happy with the way the girls played.”
Sewanhaka head coach Erica Brennan said it was a tough lost but they played better in the second half.
“Defensively, we got better and gave up three goals in the second half,” Brennan said. “It’s still a learning curve for us but every game, we are improving. It’s hard to lose, but in the end, there were a lot of positives.”
In the first half, Great Neck South outscored Sewanhaka 7-2. DelPonte led Great Neck South with a hat trick and an assist while Lee recorded a goal and two assists.
Thirty seconds into the game, DelPonte put Great Neck South up 1-0.
Four minutes later, DelPonte scored again to give Great Neck South a 2-0 lead, prompting Sewanhaka to call a timeout.
Ovadia gave Great Neck South a three goal lead with 16:54 remaining in the first half.
With 15 minutes left, Woo scored for Sewanhaka to cut the lead to two.
DelPonte responded with a hat trick to give Great Neck South a 4-1 lead.
Lee extended Great Neck South’s lead to four with 11:19 left in the first half.
Vandezande scored 21 seconds later to cut Great Neck South’s lead to 5-2.
Jenny Li scored with 1:23 remaining in the first half, giving Great Neck South a 6-2 lead.
Hannah Kareff scored as time expired and Great Neck South took a 7-2 lead into halftime.
In the second half, both teams scored three goals but Sewanhaka had the edge in shots 11-7.
DelPonte paced Great Neck South’s attack with two goals.
Woo, Vandezande, and Natalie-Chloe Malik were the goal scorers for Sewanhaka in the second half.
With four minutes and forty two seconds into the second half, Malik scored for Sewanhaka as they trailed 7-3.
Vandezande notched her second goal of the game with 15:45 remaining to pull Sewanhaka within three.
DelPonte scored her fourth of the game with 12:12 remaining as Great Neck South led 8-4.
DelPonte struck again with her fifth goal at 4:15 to give Great Neck South a five goal led.
Ovadia recorded her second of the game with 2:34 remaining, giving Great Neck South a commanding 10-4 lead.
Woo scored her second goal for Sewanhaka, but that was as far as they got as Great Neck South went on to win 10-5.

New Hyde Park defeated Roosevelt 16-2. Geena Gardella led New Hyde Park with five goals and three assists. Crysta Soloecito and Joanna Mauceri each scored four goals while goalkeeper Michelle Agerenza recorded 10 saves for New Hyde Park.
Great Neck North defeated West Hempstead 17-5. Ariella Lerner led Great Neck North with eight goals. Claire Kivelowitz scored two goals and recorded four assists while Ashley Epstein added four goals for Great Neck North.
