The Manhasset Chamber of Commerce is warning Manhasset businesses and residents about an increase in burglaries, pointing to at least five of them around Plandome Road since June.
The burglaries have been in businesses and homes. Entry has been through unlocked doors, windows or garages, said Ken Ludewig, a Nassau County police public information officer. Cash was stolen in some, but not all, of the incidents.
At least three of the burglaries were in businesses. One of the first incidents was at Manhasset Animal Hospital early June 9.
There were also two incidents at businesses overnight between Sept. 3 and Sept. 4. Both were at salons: one was at Forbici Salon on Plandome Road and the other at Studio Salon on Bayview Avenue.
There was a residential burglary on Sept. 1 on Vanderbilt Road. An individual entered the home through the unlocked garage at 9:15 when a resident was home. Nothing was stolen.
There was another residential burglary overnight between Sept. 6 and 7 on Northwoods Road.
“Homeowners should be vigilant,” Ludewig said. “They should make sure that windows and doors are secured, especially locked overnight. It’s good to leave a light on inside at least one interior in addition to exterior lights to try to create a deterrence.”
State Farm insurance agent Nancy Morris urged the Chamber of Commerce to warn local businesses about the burglaries after speaking with a detective on the case. She has seen photographs and footage of a suspect and said she hopes that the police will release a photo of him, she said.
A single party is often responsible for similar incidents that happen in close proximity, Ludewig said.
