A Floral Park man was arrested for an assault that occurred on Sept. 27 in Floral Park, police said.

Police said that Alex Mitchell, 21, had ignored officers’ commands to stop, fled police and injured two officers in a later struggle.

Detectives said that patrol officers had seen a 2006 Honda Civic traveling westbound along Terrace Avenue, breaching the speed limit.

Detectives said police then activated emergency lights and tried initiating a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop until reaching 36 Laurel St. He then exited the vehicle, ignored officers’ commands and fled on foot, according to police.

When officers caught up to Mitchell, police said that a “struggle ensued,” which left one officer with injuries to his jaw, right forearm and hand, while the second officer suffered injuries to his face and forearm.

Both officers were treated at a local hospital and released. A police medic, meanwhile, treated the defendant at the scene.

Mitchell has been charged with two counts of assault in the second degree, resisting arrest, unlawful fleeing of a police officer third degree, unlawful possession of marijuana and imprudent speed.

He will be arraigned Thursday, Sept. 28, at the First District Court in Hempstead.

Mitchell faces two to seven years if convicted, a spokeswoman from the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office said.

Dennis Lemke, Mitchell’s defense attorney, said that his client denies the allegations.

Mitchell is currently out on bail and will have a court hearing on Oct. 2 at the First District Court.
