The Village of Flower Hill last Tuesday approved a $350,000 bid from Condos Brothers Construction of Bay Shore for road work across the village.

Village Administrator Ronnie Shatzkamer said Crabapple Road, Country Club Drive, Ridge Drive and a portion of Farmview Road are set to be paved, and work is expected to begin this week.

During the Board of Trustees meeting, the village engineer, Steve Lawniczak, said the second bid, from Rosemar Construction Corp. in East Moriches, was about $27,000 higher than the low bid from Condos Brothers.

“I set a budget for $350,000, which I’d like to stay with. I don’t want to spend the extra $27,000,” Mayor Robert McNamara said about approving the lowest bid.

McNamara said the bid, originally set for 75 days, was too long to pave four roads.

“I just don’t want to get into cold weather or, God forbid, a hurricane, and they stop,” McNamara said. “It’s a big job for a lot of money, I’m sure they can tighten it up to 60 days.”

Since the meeting, Shatzkamer said the contract was negotiated down to 60 days, and she is hopeful that the work will be finished before school starts on Sept. 5.
