Four chamber music ensembles from the Great Neck Public Schools were selected as winners of the Long Island regional high school chamber music competition, part of the 2019 Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Young Musicians Program.
As winners of the regional competition, the four ensembles—one trio from North High School and three ensembles from South High School—were invited to perform at the Third Annual Long Island Regional Young Musicians Concert on Feb. 6 at the Tilles Center.
The chamber ensemble from North High featured Bob Qian (clarinet), Joshua Rothbaum (clarinet), and Frederick Sion (bass clarinet) performing River Music by Sarah Hersh. Composer Sarah Hersh is a graduate of North High School.
The three chamber ensembles from South High were: Samuel Levine (flute), Eli Goldberger (clarinet), and Benjamin Rossen (piano) performing Tarantelle, Op. 6 for Flute, Clarinet and Piano by Camille Saint-Saëns; Eli Goldberger (clarinet), Nicholas Langel (cello), and Benjamin Rossen (piano) performing Trio for Clarinet, Cello & Piano in A minor, Op. 114 by Johannes Brahms; and Daniella Brancato (soprano), Christiana Claus (flute), Nicholas Langel (cello), and Benjamin Rossen (piano) performing Chanson Madécasses for Soprano, Flute, Cello and Piano by Maurice Ravel.
The Young Musicians Program is a competition for advanced high school musicians offered by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. High school student chamber music ensembles are invited to submit applications with audio or video recordings through their school music department to be considered for participation.
Ensembles from the Long Island Regional Concert are eligible for an invitation to the Young Musicians Concert at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.
The North High chamber music program is coordinated by Joseph Rutkowski, instrumental music teacher, and Pamela Levy, performing and fine arts department chair/vocal teacher. The South High chamber music program is coordinated by Michael Schwartz, performing arts department chair/instrumental teacher, and Janine Robinson, vocal teacher.
