Free breast reconstruction awareness event Oct. 4

The Island Now

Whether you’re considering a mastectomy or lumpectomy after breast cancer or as a preventative measure, choosing the right option can be difficult.
To address these issues, a free community awareness event will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 5:30-8:30 p.m., at Northwell Health, 2000 Marcus Ave., second floor conference center in New Hyde Park.

The evening includes a panel of Northwell Health reconstructive and plastic surgeons who will discuss the latest reconstruction procedures available as well as private meetings with women who had breast reconstruction surgery.

Coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the event, Real Women, Real Results: A Breast Reconstruction Awareness Event, includes an opportunity to talk with top plastic surgeons, a chance to connect with women considering breast reconstruction, as well a safe and supportive environment to meet past breast reconstruction patients who are willing to share their stories and allow women to see the results of their procedures first-hand.

As part of the program, one family with multiple diagnoses of the breast cancer gene BRCA will share their story.

At the event, attendees will:
• Hear from Northwell Health’s expert panel of plastic surgeon specializing in advanced breast construction techniques;
• Get information about breast surgery options and what to consider when making a decision;
• Learn about the types of breast reconstruction and tips on deciding which procedure is right for you; and,
• Meet with past breast reconstruction patients to hear their stories and privately see their results.

The following physicians will participate in the awareness event:
• Dr. Mark Smith, moderator, reconstructive oncology, Northwell Health Cancer Institute
