The Friends of the Library (FOL) is launching its annual community-wide fundraising campaign in support of major new initiatives at the library, as well as a busy slate of programs and special events.
“We know that Port residents love our library. Now is the time to translate that love into a contribution,” said FOL President Amy Bass.
Appeal letters are in the mail, and donation envelopes are available throughout the library; online donations will be accepted at pwpl.org/fol/support/.
“I’m so excited to make the community aware of all the fantastic new initiatives the FOL is supporting with substantial funding,” said Mary Alice Kohs, FOL treasurer.
These new intiatives include lendable GoPro cameras and Orion StarBlast telescopes recently purchased for the library by the FOL. Additional new items and programs include Kindles that young adults can borrow, 10 laptops for use within the library, STEM workshops in the renovated Children’s Library, and greater access to MakerBot 3D printing. The FOL is also funding a redesign of the library’s popular website and the purchase of new exhibit display cases.
These new initiatives complement the FOL’s ongoing programs of support which include: Museum Passes, Tutor.com online homework help, ESOL classes, teen summer programs, Children’s Great Library Card Adventure, Sandwiched In adult lectures, SoundSwap music series, and so much more.
FOL vice president Nancy Wright pointed out that the FOL also produces special events. FOL secretary Lauren Smith and board member Fern Treiber are chairing the popular Paperback Swap on Saturday, October 21, and vice president Ellen Zimmerman and board member Carol Hiller are chairing FOL University on Sunday, November 5.
Danielle Tane is assuming the new position of FOL assistant treasurer. She is an active parent in the school district, serving as co-president of SEPTA, active in Beacon Hill, and a board member of the League of Women Voters. “We are so happy that Danielle has joined our executive committee, bringing fresh insights and perspective,” comments Bass.
For more than 50 years, the FOL has supported the library through volunteerism, fundraising, programming, outreach and advocacy. The FOL is an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
