Port Washington Union Free School District’s Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade recently presented their personal scientific hypotheses and conclusions based on their extensive scientific research to fellow students, faculty and staff.
Over the last several months, upperclassmen from Paul D. Schreiber High School have made several visits to Weber to help the middle school students generate ideas and bring their projects to fruition.
Spearheaded by Julia Russo, a senior at Paul D. Schreiber High School and member of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, the event encouraged students to develop their own hypotheses, determine how to test them, and document the results to present their findings.
Several students displayed their trifold posters that featured different plants, earth science, and physics demonstrations at individual stations to those who attended. Weber’s faculty and selective upperclassmen from Schreiber assessed the projects using a science fair rubric. Topics ranged from the efficiency of plant biofuels to visual impairments to the effects of color temperature on concentration.
