A Girl Scout, Mia Perulli, told the Manorhaven Board of Trustees at Thursday’s meeting that she hopes to construct an obstacle course for dogs at the Manorhaven Dog Park.
To install the obstacle course, she said she will need $2,600, and raised $62 at a garage sale she held over the weekend.
Perulli, a candidate for the Girl Scouts Gold Award, said with the course she is addressing a lack of resources and activities for pet owners on a day-to-day basis.
“I would like to create and set up and build an obstacle course there,” she said. “For owners and dogs to just interact with each other and just involve the community more.”
Trustees showed excitement about helping the girl achieve her goal, and all donated $20 to Perulli’s campaign, which was met with donations from many of the residents at the meeting.
Perulli said she got the idea from an obstacle course she saw at Michael J. Tully Park in Roslyn. The course at the Roslyn park is a novice dog course, Perulli said, which is the type she is planning to construct.
“I want to promote and create awareness for healthy living for owners and their dogs in the Manorhaven community,” she said.
Mayor Jim Avena said that he appreciates Perulli’s interest in the village’s dog park.
“We take pride in it,” he said. “We appreciate your interest in it, and we would be happy to work with you.”
In unrelated business, the village board voted to establish a tree advisory committee in Manorhaven, which Deputy Mayor Priscilla von Roeschlaub said is a step toward being classified as a Tree City USA.
She said the village has been trying to obtain the classification for four years.
“It is a very prestigious organization to belong to, it gives us a lot of benefits,” she said. “This is the very final piece of business we have to put in place.”
Von Roeschlaub said the village has planted 16 trees throughout the village and is in the process of buying more.
