A Glen Head woman was sentenced Monday for smothering her newborn daughter and discarding her body after hiding the pregnancy from her family.
Sharon Seudat, 22, was sentenced to eight years in prison and five years post-release supervision by State Supreme Court Justice Angelo Delligatti in Mineola.
Seudat pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in November after a grand jury indictment on offenses that included two counts of murder.
On March 31, 2016, Seudat, a former Nassau Community College student, admitted that shortly after delivering a girl at her Glen Head home, she smothered the child in sheets and blankets before placing the 7-pound, 5-ounce girl’s body in a trash bag.
Seudat was arrested after a paramedics responded to a 911 call at her Walnut Street home and found Seudat with severe vaginal bleeding.
Once at the hospital, doctors determined the then 20-year-old had recently given birth, and Nassau County police discovered the baby’s body behind Seudat’s home in the trash bag.
“I’m sorry for what happened, and thank you to the court,” Seudat said during her sentencing.
Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas responded to the sentencing with a statement about the county’s Safe Haven Law, allowing parents to anonymously leave infants less than 30 days old at a hospital, fire house or police station.
“Instead of taking advantage of this law, which was designed to support mothers and vulnerable children, this defendant tragically took her newborn’s life,” Singas said.
