Come Friday, Mineola residents will have a new place to help them get well sooner.
Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care is opening its 19th Long Island facility on Sept. 1 at 50 E. Jericho Turnpike, the company announced Monday.
The center occupies a previously vacant lot next to a Walgreens drug store, offering residents a place to get physical exams, X-rays, vaccinations and other health care services, the company said.
The site’s proximity to pharmacies and other shopping centers made it attractive to Northwell-GoHealth, which aims to open centers “in places that we believe people are living their lives on a daily basis,” Sarah Arora, GoHealth’s New York president, said in an interview.
“Mineola is a prime example of not only a neighborhood where a large amount of our patients live, but a lot of our patients also work,” said Adam Boll, the vice president of Northwell Ventures Operations.
The facility, GoHealth’s first in Mineola, expands Northwell Health’s presence in the village, where the state’s largest private employer also operates its Center for Human Reproduction and a substance abuse treatment clinic.
Northwell and GoHealth targeted Mineola in part because many of their Roslyn urgent care center’s patients came from Mineola, Arora said.
Northwell Health’s partnership with GoHealth allows patients to be transferred from urgent care facilities to the health system’s hospitals or referred to Northwell specialists if they need additional care, Boll said. Other Northwell doctors can also access patients’ X-rays and other medical records generated at GoHealth centers, he said.
“When you walk into one of our centers you know that you’re getting kind of a Northwell Health quality of care, so that has been a huge asset to our network,” Arora said.
The Mineola location is part of GoHealth’s recent expansion efforts, Arora said. The company now operates 39 urgent care centers throughout the New York metropolitan area and hopes to have 50 open by the end of 2018, she said. Locations in Great Neck and Port Washington are also set to open in September, Boll said.
The new GoHealth facility is on the former site an Entenmann’s Bakery Outlet that closed in 2013. It was later demolished and replaced by Walgreens, with an empty lot left for the GoHealth building.
“It seemed like a good use of the area,” village Trustee Dennis Walsh said.
GoHealth will join other urgent care facilities in Mineola where patients can get treatment for illnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening.
NYU Winthrop Hospital operates one at 222 Station Plaza North, and the CityMD urgent care chain has a location at 292 Herricks Road.
