Great Neck musicians selected for state conference

More than a dozen musicians from North and South High Schools have been selected for the 2018 New York State School Music Association All-State Conference, to be held in Rochester from Nov. 29 to Dec. 2.

In addition, five students are Alternates for the event.

At the All-State Conference, sponsored by NYSSMA, student musicians will perform together in various ensembles. Thousands of students auditioned for this competition last spring at solo and ensemble festivals throughout the state.

Band players from North High School will include Joshua Rothbaum on clarinet, Frederick Sion playing bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet, and Daniel Itzkowitz on the French horn. Violinist Daniel Zeng was also selected as an alternate for the All-State Orchestra.

These students are taught by Joseph Rutkowski, instrumental music teacher. Pamela Levy is the fine and performing arts department head at North High.

Symphony Orchestra players from South High School will include Jeremy Chen on oboe, and Jaehyun Kim, Ann Zhang and Oliver Lee on violin, while Samuel Levine will play flute with the Symphonic Band. Additionally, Zhen Huang will play clarinet with the Wind Ensemble and Nicholas Langel will play cello with the String Orchestra.

Shourav Saha will be on bass with the Mixed Chorus, Ashley Yu will sing as a soprano, and Justin Lin will sing as a tenor.

Alternates include Daniella Brancato as a soprano and Deep Datta, Veronica Khim and Chloe Metz on violin.

These students are taught by Michael Schwartz, performing arts department head/instrumental music teacher, band teacher Mark Boschen and vocal music teacher Janine Robinson.
