Great Neck Plaza trustees are seeking to again receive a Nassau County grant to make improvement to the village.
At last Wednesday’s Board of Trustees meeting, the board voted to schedule a public hearing on March 15 to further discuss submitting an application for the county’s Community Development Block Grant.
“We’ve been very fortunate to be successful so I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t go forward with that,” Great Neck Plaza Mayor Jean Celender said. “It’s hard to find agencies to fund you and they’re always looking for good projects to fund and they’re a pleasure to work with.”
The Community Development Block Grant program began in 1974, with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development providing funding to various municipalities.
According to the county, it receives an allocation of those funds each year to disperse to local municipalities.
Celender said the village received grant funds the past two years, one of the grants was used for the repaving of the village’s Maple Drive parking lot, while the other was used to upgrade the village’s streetlight fixtures to LED lights.
“More recently we changed what we go after and we’ve been doing more brick-and-mortar type of projects,” she said.
The public hearing is scheduled for March 15 at 8 p.m.
Also at the meeting, the board voted to adjourn an application for a 61-unit apartment complex at 15 Bond St.
Village Attorney Richard Gabriele said the village was still awaiting some information it requested from the applicant, Effie Namdar, of 14 Park Place LLC, which is seeking to build the complex.
The board adjourned the application until its March 15 to allow the applicant to submit the requested information.
