Michael Sweeney, the Village of Great Neck Plaza’s longtime commissioner of public services, has retired.

Patricia O’Byrne, the village clerk-treasurer, said Sweeney retired at the end of August after working for the village for 31 years. He worked his way up from supervisor for code enforcement to eventually head the Building Department as commissioner, she said.

O’Byrne said his successor, Richard Belziti, started on Thursday.

Belziti previously worked as the building superintendent of the Village of Roslyn. He has also served as a building inspector in the villages of Bellerose, South Floral Park and Stewart Manor, according to their websites, and previously worked as a building official in New Hyde Park.

Belziti did not return a request for comment on his new position.
