Great Neck students recognized for achievement in writing

The Island Now

Three students from the Great Neck Public Schools have been selected by the National Council of Teachers of English as recipients of the 2018 Achievement Award in Writing.

Those students are Alan Chau and Deborah Malekan of North High School, and Ethan Wang of South High School. All three students received Certificates of Superior Writing for their submissions.

Each student prepared two essays for this competition. Student submissions from the Great Neck Public Schools were reviewed by their classroom teacher and English department chairperson, then submitted to NCTE for evaluation. Two independent judges scored each submission on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice.

This year’s competition featured submissions from 462 students. Of that number, 227 received Certificates of Superior Writing.

The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based program that recognizes some of the best student writers in the nation. The contest is open to high school juniors in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, American schools abroad, and the Virgin Islands.
