The East Williston board of trustees and Mayor Bonnie Parente have announced in an email that the Memorial Day 5k Race has been canceled. The village is considering rescheduling the race for a later date and mentioned Labor Day weekend as one possibility.

The organizers of the race would need to begin preparation now if it were to be held on Memorial Day weekend, the board said, which is not possible given the current social distancing protocols.

This would have been the 41st annual East Williston Memorial Day 5k Race.

A parade honoring those who have died in service typically follows the race. In the past, it has featured the Willets Road School band, Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops and Mayor Bonnie Parente.

The village also holds a Lil Tykes Fun Run for children ages six and under.

Although the 5k will not take place as scheduled, the village will hold a Memorial Day ceremony, although the form that it will take has yet to be determined.
