Five first responders and three residents, including a woman who jumped out of a third-floor window, were injured during a fire in Great Neck Plaza Sunday morning, according to the Nassau County Police Department’s Arson Bomb Squad.
The third-floor fire occurred just after 7 a.m., according to officials. As the Arson Bomb Squad entered the four-story apartment building at 50 Brompton Road, a woman on the third floor leaped out of the window, while an officer attempted to catch her and braced her fall, officials said.
The woman was taken to a local hospital for a compound fracture of her right ankle and a partially collapsed lung, officers said. Efforts to determine her current status were unavailing.
Officials said 85 fire personnel and 15 trucks arrived at the scene to combat the flames, including members of Manhasset-Lakeville, Roslyn, Plandome, Port Washington, Garden City Park, New Hyde Park, Floral Park, and Great Neck Vigilant Fire Department.
Three members of the Nassau County Police Department were transported to a local hospital for injuries, two for smoke inhalation and one for neck and back pain.
Officials said two other residents of the building and two firemen were treated for minor injuries at the scene but did not require transportation to a hospital.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined but officials said it appeared to be non-criminal in nature as the investigation remained ongoing.
