Great Neck Plaza’s annual concert series will usher in summer in the village June 18, presenting free concerts every Tuesday for the rest of the season at the Firefighters Park gazebo.
The summer concert series, hosted in cooperation with the Great Neck Park District, is a decades-old tradition in the Plaza, having started during the mayoral tenure of Alan Gussack. This year there will be 11 shows, all beginning at 8 p.m., from June 18 to Aug. 27.
“We’ve added some new great bands and brought back some of the old favorites,” Great Neck Plaza Mayor Jean Celender said last Friday.
This year’s festivities will start on Tuesday, June 18, at 8 p.m. with Piece of the Rock performing “music for all generations.” Then David Saul and the Electronic Dudes will be playing some classic rock hits June 25.
The Hambones will be bringing “country rock and R&B” to the Plaza July 2 and the Meade Brothers Band, a local band that frequently performs in the Great Neck area, will offer “the best of rock ‘n’ roll” July 9.
Sugar and Spice will bring a taste of Motown July 16, before The Sixties Band visits July 23 to bring “sounds of the Sixties” to Great Neck. Blue Bayou, a Linda Ronstadt tribute band, will close off the month July 30.
Pamela Levy, the head of fine and performing arts at Great Neck North High School, will return to head up a night of “Opera Under the Stars” Aug. 6.
Phil Costa & the Something Special Band will offer some “summer swing” Aug. 13. The Liverpool Shuffle will then offer a night of “Beatles Mania” Aug. 20, before the McLean Avenue Band, which will bring Ireland to the park, closes out the series on Aug. 27.
In the event of inclement weather, the Great Neck Social Center at 80 Grace Ave. will be used as an indoor concert hall. To find out if a concert has been moved, contact Village Hall on the day of the concert or leave a message at (516) 482-4500.
“It’s really a very popular community event that happens every year,” Celender said. “People are always calling asking who’s on and if there’s a concert tonight.”
