Eighty-three high school seniors from the North Shore were named as National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists on Wednesday.
They were among approximately 16,000 semifinalists across the nation and will have an opportunity to compete for around 7,600 scholarships valued at more than $30 million.
The Great Neck area accounted for most of the North Shore’s total, with 29 semifinalists attending North and South high schools.
Yuna Ahn, Ryan Y. Cho, Lukas H. Gandras, Kevin Gao, Bradley Y. He, Brandon R. Huang, Ethan L. Jiang, Juny Kim, Kathryn Lee, Rini Lee, Albert Li, Zhu Liu, Grace Y. Luo, David Mo, Daniel D. Moon, Elliot Y. Shi, Nicholas Y. Su, Nicholas E. Tung, David Y. Wang, Mia J. Wang, and Anthony Zhan from South High were all named semifinalists.
Jonathan Hakimi, Albert Jan, Mikaela A. Lipp, Alice Liu, Adam B. Sanders, Gracie R. Tropp-Levy, Lauren Yu and Michelle Zeng from North High were also named semifinalists.
Port Washington’s Schreiber High School had 16 seniors on the list, the second-most of any North Shore area. Shayne L. Bersin, Isaac M. Goldstein Ryan D. Kessler, Mia R. Kurta, Jimin Lee, Noah Loewy, Rajen N. Parekh, Samantha R. Radinsky, Daniel P. Ruskin, Alexandra B. Salzman, Jacob T. Schorr, Nathaniel A. Senders, Gavin G. Shaub, Jeffrey Sung, Erik Tang and Avery A. VonRoeschlaub represent Schreiber on the list.
Mir Zayid Alam, Ava J. Balacek, Joshua M. De Leeuw, Taylor G. Fox, Ben Glauner, Noemie S. Gomes-Jourdan, Ethan J. Horowitz, Sanjna Kedia, Sarah B. Kim, Michael A. Raybetz, Gwendolyn A. Seto, Emma Wang and Eric H. Wang were the 13 students from Manhasset High School on the list.
From Herricks High School, Jane Chung, Jay Chung, Abhinav Goyal, Preethi Krishnamoorthy, Samuel Leung, Samantha S. Moy, Kyle Pinzon, Rhea D. Rasquinha and David D. Zhang were named semifinalists.
Khushi H. Shah was New Hyde Park Memorial High School’s lone representative on the list, and Jacob S. Sinanan was Floral Park Memorial High’s only senior on the list.
Roslyn High School’s five representatives on the list were Ryann Chou, Julia R. Diamond, Grace Peng, Lindsey T. Russ, and Ethan J. Wachsman.
Ian C. Bailey, Anteng Chen, Ryan Padala, and Anthony R. Remick were the four seniors from Garden City High School named semifinalists.
Chaminade High School and the Wheatley School each had two seniors named to the semifinalist list. John Roderick O. Cervantes and Callum P. Smith made up Chaminade’s list of representatives. Anya A. Chabria and Layla C. Jarraghy from Old Westbury represented the Wheatley School.
Lucia G. Martin was the lone representative from North Shore High School on the list.
Of the 16,000 semifinalists, around 15,000 are expected to advance to finalist status. Selection committees then begin choosing National Merit scholarship winners, with the first scholarships to be formally awarded in March.
There are three types of scholarships: corporate-sponsored Merit scholarships, National Merit $2,500 scholarships, and college-sponsored Merit scholarships.
