A plan to build a six-story apartment building drew opposition from Village of Great Neck Plaza trustees at a meeting last Wednesday.
The proposal for the lot at 150 Great Neck Road came from L+M Development Partners Inc., a real estate development firm. The company’s managing director, Tell Metzger, gave an informal presentation at the meeting about the lot, which is used for parking.
“We feel that our application would meet a high housing demand and also improve strong local retail as there would be more people walking through the village,” Metzger said.
The project entailed a six-story building with parking on the ground floor. There are few buildings along Great Neck Road that are as tall as this.
“I find it offensive as it will block the scenery and everything around the surrounding buildings,” Pamela Marksheid, the deputy mayor, said. “It’s very important to focus on the feel of the neighborhood and what the village would deem acceptable.”
Trustee Michael DeLuccia agreed with Marksheid in terms of the neighborhood’s feelings about a project of this magnitude.
“The fact of the matter is that the existing buildings won’t be happy,” he said.
Ultimately, the board suggested that Metzger and L+M Development scale down the building proposal to help reach a compromise in the future.
