A 78-year-old man was killed after being struck by a school bus while crossing Nirvana Avenue in Great Neck Monday night, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

Detectives said the man, who was not identified, attempted to cross Nirvana Avenue’s intersection at Middle Neck Road when he was struck by a 60-year-old woman driving a Towne Bus Company school bus at 6:37 p.m. on Monday.

The driver, whose name was not provided by law enforcement officials, attempted to turn onto Nirvana Avenue from Middle Neck Road when the accident occurred, according to detectives.  The male pedestrian suffered multiple injuries and was later pronounced dead  at a local hospital, officials said.

No further injuries were reported by officials, despite several students being on board at the time of the accident, according to Newsday. Officials said the investigation of the incident was ongoing.

Efforts to reach officials for further comment were unavailing.

Robert Quinn, a spokesperson for Towne Bus Company, told Newsday, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim and everyone affected by this tragedy.” Quinn, according to Newsday, added that the driver was “removed from service” and that the company was cooperating fully with the investigation.

Efforts to reach Quinn or another representative from the bus company for further comment were unavailing.
