Herricks High School and Middle School won multiple prizes at the National History Day State Competition, held at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown on April 29. After presenting their work, several students will now head to the University of Maryland for the National Competition from June 9-12.
Students representing Herricks High School won prizes in five of the seven categories and came home with three first place winning projects, which will go on to be national contenders. Aarya Agarwal, Abhinav Goyal, Aditya Lodha and Prameet Shah presented a group documentary, “The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising: Courage Knows No Number;” Selina Chiang, Grace Kim, Maggie Lau and Emily Wei presented a group performance, “Scrubbing Away the Blackness: The Plight of the Stolen Aboriginal Generation” and Karan Kaknia, Gurvir Singh, David Xiang and David Zhang for created a group website, “The India Partition: A Line Drawn in Blood.”
Herricks High School students were also victorious in earning two third place awards. Felisha Ma attained this honor for her individual performance, “Cherokee vs. Georgia,” while Amisha Brahmbhatt, Prableen Kaur, Roshni Patel and Sarah Ninan were recognized for their group performance, “The Easter Rising of 1916: The Tragic Fight for an Independent Ireland.”
Herricks Middle School had an outstanding second place group performance presentation that will also move on to the national level. Congratulations to Celeste Zhang, Dheyala Simrin, Sanjana Lodha and Tiffany Leo for their group exhibit, Lois Gibbs: The Triumph and Tragedy of a Mother on a Mission.”
