Herricks High School students win in SPARK! challenge

Herricks High School’s Medical Laboratory Technology students were awarded in the Northwell Health SPARK! Challenge after a tie with another school for the “Employee/Facebook Favorite” distinction left both contenders winners of $1,000 prizes.

This year’s event was a special virtual edition that spotlighted many of the key roles that were invaluable during the pandemic.

Under the guidance of teacher Dana Fischer, two Herricks High School classes collaborated on a poster advertisement for the career of Physician Assistant, Heart Hospital, North Shore University Hospital.

A total of 27 students, both hybrid and remote, worked together using applications such as Google Meet and Jamboard. Sophomore Kriya Patel served as the team’s art manager and applied her artistic talents to the team’s ideas and proposals for the poster design. ​​​

Winners were honored during a virtual award ceremony. Earlier in the school year, students participated in a virtual career day as part of the SPARK! Challenge experience.

They had opportunities to explore various roles within the medical field and hear presentations from professionals, with an emphasis on the past year’s unforeseen circumstances and the valuable impact of frontline workers.
