On April 1, Herricks High School Science Research student Carrie Hsu competed and won first place award in the New York State Science and Engineering Fair held at the New York Hall of Science. Carrie will now compete on the international level at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, to be held in Phoenix Arizona from May 11 to 17.
The Intel ISEF is considered to be the “Olympics of science competitions” and brings more than 1,700 students from all 50 states and seventy nations together to compete for scholarships, grants, internships and a trip to attend the Nobel Prize ceremonies.
Carrie won the first place award in the Embedded Systems category with her research project entitled “Development of a Flexible Durometer Sensor for Improving Hardness Tactile Modality Using Piezoelectric Polymers.” She completed her research work under the mentorship of Dr. Ioannis Kymissis of the Columbia University Laboratory for Unconventional Electronics. Dr. Kymissis is a proud member of the Herricks High School Class of 1994.
A member of the junior class, Carrie is a three-year participant in the Herricks High School Science Research program under the advisement of Mrs. Renée Barcia.
