Herricks Middle School students connect with professional clarinetist

The Island Now

Students in the Herricks Middle School Wind Ensemble, advised by Alicia Brown, met virtually with a clarinetist from the United States Coast Guard Band.

During this exciting experience, students heard MU1 Charlie Suriyakham speak about life as a professional military musician. He discussed the competitive audition process, the excitement of traveling in this ensemble and the pleasure he experiences from performing with such high-caliber musicians.

The students were inspired by MU1 Suriyakham’s advice about practicing and keeping a love of music in their lives. MU1 Suriyakham answered questions from Herricks students related to performing during COVID and shared that professional musicians are taking many similar precautions to those in schools. MU1 Suriyakham performed excerpts from some of his favorite pieces and even played happy birthday to one of the participants.

“We are very grateful to receive such a positive message from another inspiring professional musician,” Brown said.
