The Herricks Highlanders are expected to return to their home field for the Oct. 13 football game against MacArthur sporting new bleachers and a new comfort station.

Officials announced at Thursday’s meeting that the construction is on target with the stadium seating installed and the comfort station expected to be completed within the next two weeks.

The comfort station is “about 85 percent complete with the exterior done and the roof installed” Steven Walsh, the district architect from BBS Architects, Landscape Architects & Engineers PC, said.

Park East Construction Corp. has to schedule a Health Department final review before opening the comfort station.

The new aluminum 1,600-seat bleachers are in place and incorporate Herricks’ blue in the skirt and seat-backs.

Walsh said that students can cheer on their classmates at homecoming with no more worries of splinters.

The Landtek Group was contracted this summer to complete the running track, bleachers, press box and comfort station.

The running track opened for public use in May.

The athletic field will also include a crosswalk for students to use when walking to school from a parking lot near the stadium.

School Superintendent Fino Celano assured attendees that he has been checking on the progress every day and is confident the work will be complete in time.

Elana Keller, student representative from Herricks High School, said on behalf of the cheerleaders that they are thankful and excited about the new athletic facilities.

The completion of the bleachers and comfort station, along with some finishing touches to the cafeteria, will conclude phase 2A of the district’s capital improvements project.

Phase 2B will include electrical upgrades at the high school and ventilation, drainage, sidewalk and asphalt improvements at all schools in the district.

The board approved Graci Paving Associates’ bid to complete the asphalt work.
