Students from Floral Park Memorial High School visited the kindergarten and first-grade students at Floral Park-Bellerose Schools as part of the Junior Achievement of New York High School Heroes program Dec. 4.
The program encourages high school students to become role models by teaching and inspiring elementary students.
The topics of the day focused on financial literacy and entrepreneurship. The kindergarten classes were taught from the JA Ourselves program, which introduces the students to personal economics and the choices consumers make to meet their needs and wants.
As part of the lesson, the kindergartners participated in the Needs and Wants activity, choosing essential and non-essential items from a colorful poster.
The high school students then read aloud an illustrated book, “Welcome Home!” about how the main character earns money to host a party for her friend.
The first-grade classes were taught from the JA Our Families program, which introduces students to entrepreneurship. One portion of the lesson included a floor map and toy car to help the students learn about map symbols and highlight neighborhood businesses.
Principal Jamie Adams said that many of the visiting high school students were once students at Floral Park-Bellerose School, which made the program that more special.
To participate in the Junior Achievement of New York High School Heroes program, high school student-volunteers are required to attend two training sessions to learn how to teach the curriculum.
