The Hillside Public Library, in conjunction with Assemblyman Ed Ra’s office, is doing a School Supply Drive. We appeal to our patrons to please consider this worthy cause, and there are boxes in the library where your donations can be placed. Included in the needed items are: backpacks, binders, crayons, erasers, calculators, highlighters, rulers, composition books, scissors, markers, pens and pencils and other school supplies. We thank you for your generosity.

Painted Sunflower Flower Pot Friday, July 30 at 7 p.m. Paint a Beautiful Sunflower Flower Pot for indoors or outdoors to liven up your space. Supplies: A clean (washed and dried) terracotta/ clay pot. Acrylic Paints: red, blue, yellow, white and black.3 different sized brushes: A very fine one for details (pointed round 5), a medium (flat or angle) and a larger (flash wash 3/4) one for the background. Tools: A cup with water, paper towel, mixing plastic pallet (can be a paper plate)

Meditation for Modern Life Tuesday, August 3 at 1 p.m. There are many benefits that come from meditation on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. During this engaging workshop, you will learn a simple time-tested technique and even have the chance to try this out! Hometown Stories: Long Island as Inspiration Tuesday, August 3 at 7 p.m. This library program is suitable for patrons over age 13. Take a trip around Long Island, and find out why USA Today bestselling author, Jeannie Moon, brought the charm of the small towns and communities where she grew up into her award-winning stories. Jeannie will talk about her large extended family, the story of how they came to Long Island in the late 1920’s, and how her history informs and enriches the books she writes. Summer Bingo Wednesday, August 4 at 11 a.m. Join us in the parking lot for a fun game of bingo! This event will take place outside. (weather permitting). This is an adults only program.

Magic of Compost Wednesday, August 4 at 7 p.m. Composting is the act of recycling and reusing kitchen waste and garden refuse, along with all kinds of other organic materials to create compost, something akin to soil. Join Master Gardener Pauline Kerhli for an evening of composting magic, making something wonderful out of stuff we throw away. Learn 4 different types of composting methods in this workshop, including outside and indoor composting, aerobic and anaerobic techniques, worm and lasagna approaches.

Youthful Aging, Ageless Consciousness Through Meditation Thursday, August 5 at 7 p.m. Matthew Raider MD has practiced and taught geriatric medicine for over 30 years. He will present a three-fold method of maintaining youthful function in advancing age. Intro to Canva Monday, August 2 at 5:30 p.m. Grades 5 – 12. Join Ms. A as she virtually shows you how to make graphics for social media and more with the program Canva! Use the Canva website along with Ms. A (canva.com) or download the Canva app on your phone, tablet, or ipad.

Stemtastic: Animal Tales! Wednesday, August 4 at 4:30 p.m. Grades: K-4 (parental help with younger grades). We’ll share excerpts from the book, “What Would You Do With a Tail Like This?” and learn of some extraordinary true tails in nature. Then we’ll set to work engineering our own tails, using a variety of up-cycled materials. We’ll learn how to make a pre-hensile tail, a detachable tail & tails that fold and expand. Materials Needed: construction paper, egg cartons, paper towel tubes, scissors, markers and/or crayons, 2 popsicle sticks, string optional: small strip of Velcro.
