The Island Now

The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County will be holding its 11th annual Golf and Games Outing on Monday, July 29, at the Engineers Country Club.

Returning this year will be Mahjong and card games, including an exclusive boutique shopping experience. All proceeds from the event go to support the center’s programming, which uses the history and lessons of the Holocaust to teach about the dangers of antisemitism, bullying, racism and all other manifestations of intolerance.

This year’s golf honoree for the outing will be a member of HMTC’s Board of Directors, Arthur Katz. Katz is president of Knockout Pest Control in Uniondale, a company he founded in 1975, which serves the New York metropolitan area. He has been very involved in the Jewish community of Long Island, serving as the chairperson of the Long Island Cabinet of UJA-Federation of New York, with the Jewish Arts Festival, and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island.

He currently serves as the Senior Ambassador of the JCRC LI and is also on the boards of the Shechter School of Long Island, and the Long Island Real Estate Group, an organization which he is one of the founding members of. Katz has been honored with the 100 Black Men of Long Island’s Business Award as well as the Julius O. Pearse Presidential Award. He currently lives in Jericho with his wife Barbara; they have two daughters and are the proud grandparents of four.

This year’s games honoree at the outing will be Harriet Becker. Becker is one of HMTC’s most dedicated volunteers, as giving back to her community has always been a priority to her, starting when she was involved with the PTA and ORT when her children were young.

She has also been deputy mayor as well as police and park commissioners of Great Neck Estates. In addition to her work at HMTC, Becker currently serves on the board of directors of the Gold Coast Arts Center, Great Neck Community Fund and Great Neck Community Education, where she conducts special events and trips and is the fundraiser for Rach Out America. She and her husband, Eugene, currently reside in Great Neck and have three children and seven grandchildren.

The golf outing is sponsored by corporate partners Stewart Title, Knockout Pest Control Inc., The Ike, Molly & Steven Elias Foundation, and The Signature B&B Companies. Additional sponsorship packages are still available.
