Josephine Mairzadeh announces candidacy for the Great Neck Library’s Board of Trustees

The Island Now

I am announcing that I am running for the Great Neck Library Board of Trustees. Having lived in Great Neck for 26 years, I am running for the seat currently held by Josie Pizer. I am the only candidate who has been endorsed by the library’s nominating committee.

I have a rich background in public service. My diverse experiences branch from my position as Legislative Aide to Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum and time spent as the co-founder of the civic nonprofit 30 Years After. I also have experience with fundraising in the nonprofit sector, having both worked and sat on the boards of prominent organizations to include the Sephardic Heritage Alliance, Inc. (SHAI), and my work as an Apprentice at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Thomas J. Watson Library.

My key campaign platform centers around bringing visibility to young adult patrons.

I believe that giving the youth a platform in library decision making is vital. While patrons under the age of 18 can’t vote, it is important that their voices are heard. Having built multiple young leadership divisions in the past, I intend to create a Young Leadership Board that will act as its own committee. In doing so, the library can incorporate a liaison that reports to the Board of Trustees to ensure that the ideas discussed are being heard and considered.

Libraries are more than just books, they provide an ecosystem of service that both harbors and refortifies our community long term. They are an incubator of technological advancement for people of all ages, who can have access to the tools to design what they dream – even if they couldn’t have access to it otherwise. Libraries do this by providing the necessary structure to empower its members as future leaders who can then give back to their diverse communities.

I have the necessary experience and is ready to take on another leadership role. My campaign team is enthusiastic about this endeavor and we look forward to the upcoming weeks.
