Local Girl Scouts host evening to empower girls

The Island Now

Girl Scouts of Nassau County will celebrate International Day of the Girl on Thursday, Oct. 11, with an EmPOWER Girls event at the Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting empowerment and the fulfillment of girls human rights. More than 150 women and girls, ages 6 and up will attend the event and enjoy an evening of engaging speakers and meaningful conversation around the importance of empowering women and girls in our community and the world.

“International Day of the Girl is a wonderful opportunity for Girl Scouts of Nassau County to connect with women and young girls. On this day, we gather globally to work alongside one another to expand existing learning opportunities for girls, and open a dialogue to discuss how to prepare them better for the future,” said Rande Bynum, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “Our EmPOWER Girls event will create a one-of-a-kind opportunity for our local community to gather and advocate for girls. This event aligns with the mission of Girl Scouts, which is to prepare our girls for a lifetime of leadership!”

Girl Scouts of Nassau County is co-hosting this event with Domestic Harmony Foundation, Girls Inc. Long Island, Junior League of Long Island and One World Girl Inc.

Guests are invited to network with like-minded people, check out our community resource table and participate in a service project preparing feminine hygiene packets for girls in underserved communities. There will be educational activities and games for the youngest participants, and light refreshments will be served.

The program is $25 for adults and girls 12 years old and over; and $10 for girls under 12 years old. Anyone interested in attending must pre-register at: https://gsnc.wufoo.com/forms/day-of-the-girl-empower-girls/.
