Long Island Marathon to kick off on May 3

The Island Now

Get ready and get set for marathon weekend. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran corralled NEFCU 2019 Long Island Marathon leadership, local athletes, and sponsors to discuss the new course, new events, call for volunteers, and encourage registration.

The 46th annual Long Island Marathon weekend will take place on Friday, May 3 to Sunday, May 5, and will feature a full festival of events including the Long Island Health & Fitness EXPO, guest speakers, races for families and kids, and the marathon’s first Food Truck Festival featuring over a dozen local food vendors.

For more information on the schedule of events, registration and volunteer opportunities, go to www.runsignup.com/Race/LongIslandMarathon/Page-3.

To provide a taste of the Food Truck Festival, Green Street Food Truck, The Love Coffee Truck, NY Strip Food Truck, and Cheezy Pete’s were lined up at the press conference to showcase signature items that will be available for purchase at the event.

“The Long Island Marathon is one of the region’s most exciting athletic events, which has evolved from a small race that attracted avid runners more than 40 years ago, to a weekend long festival for kids, families, and the entire community,” said Curran.  “This year’s race anticipates over 5,000 participants but there is still room to register — and with an expanded lineup of events, there is an increased need for volunteers.  Whether you’re an athlete, a foodie, a spectator or a volunteer — I encourage all residents to take part in this iconic Long Island event.”

To continue their support for the marathon, representatives for the marathon’s Presenting Sponsors including RXR Realty, Northwell Health, Wantagh Mitsubishi, and Nuun Hydration joined the press conference.  Local legislators Thomas McKevitt and Rose Marie Walker also joined to show their support.

In addition, local runners and married couple Hashi and Kimberley Sivananthan, who will be running their first marathon, were also in attendance to discuss their training and excitement for the event. David Feldman, president and CEO of Imperial Commercial Cleaning, who has recruited approximately 40 employees to the 5K team while fundraising for Friends of Karen, the race beneficiary, was also in attendance. Friends of Karen is a nonprofit that supports critically ill children and their families.

With the support of the Nassau County Police Department, Nassau’s Office of Emergency Management, Department of Public Works, Parks Department, and Department of Health, the 2019 marathon, half marathon and 10k races will feature new courses that will highlight more of Nassau County’s Parks.  The new route will make the race more accessible to spectators and more scenic for athletes.

The full marathon course will head south down Merrick Avenue, making its way to Cedar Creek Park before returning to Eisenhower Park. All races will now start in Eisenhower Park, improving the experience for our spectators and athletes.

2019 NEFCU Long Island Marathon events will include a full marathon (26.2 miles), a half marathon (13.1miles), 10K, 5K, 1k and kid’s races.

In addition to the marathon, Race Awesome created an all new Long Island Health & Fitness EXPO, to be held over two days in a premium marquee tent at the marathon’s start/finish-line area. The EXPO will feature fitness vendors from across Long Island, as well as NEFCU Long Island Marathon sponsors.

This family-friendly health and fitness weekend is aimed at motivating people to engage in a healthy lifestyle within their community. The free, non-ticketed event will be open to the general public. Expo visitors can sample nutritious food, try out the latest exercise equipment, test drive technology, explore recovery products and listen to lectures from industry professionals and pro-athletes.
