Nassau County police arrested a man on assault charges in Mineola last Wednesday, with police saying he allegedly injured six officers on the scene during the arrest.
Darius Johnson, 24, who faces charges of second-degree assault and obstructing governmental administration, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment last Thursday, authorities said. His address was not given by police or listed in court documents.
The Legal Aid Society, which represents Johnson, could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon.
Detectives said police were responding to a call of a “suspicious male” peering into car windows at a Walgreens parking lot at 12 E. Jericho Turnpike. Police said that when they arrived at the scene, Johnson identified himself but could not provide identification.
Johnson then allegedly became “combative” toward the officers as they tried to confirm his identity, police said, spitting and flailing his arms and legs. Six officers received minor injuries like scrapes and abrasions during the arrest, which took place around 9:30 p.m., police said.
The officers and Johnson were taken to local hospitals for treatment, police said.
Johnson’s next appearance at Nassau First District Court was scheduled for Tuesday, May 28. He is currently being held in jail on $3,000 bond, or $1,500 cash, which were not posted, according to court documents.
If convicted, Johnson could face between 2 1/3 and seven years in jail, the authorities said.
