Man rescued after Tesla crash in Port

The Port Washington Fire Department rescued a man last Wednesday from the passenger seat of a car after the driver crashed into a brick column that fell on the car on Shore Road, officials said.

The passenger was taken to the hospital for observation, but did not require the help of life-support technicians at the scene, Brian Waterson, chief of the Port Washington Fire Department, said.

The car crashed into a cement and brick column at 10 p.m. on Shore Road near the entrance to the Soundview Marketplace.

The driver of the Tesla electric car was able to escape, but the department needed to call a tow truck to “stabilize the structure” for the passenger pinned under the column to be removed, Waterson said. It took 35 minutes from the time the call was received until the passenger was extricated in stable condition, he said.

“It appears that there may have been an issue with the car,” Waterson said.

The Port Washington Fire Department was assisted by specialized rescue teams from the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department and the Bethpage Fire Department.
