The Cow Neck Historical Society is continuing a five-decades running tradition, but at a new time of year.

Traditionally held in September, the society’s Country Fair will be held in Saturday, Oct. 15 instead.

“With kids going back to school and the High Holy Days, there were a lot of scheduling conflicts,” Cow Neck Historical Society trustee Brandie Shaw said of pushing the fair back a month. “And last year it was a scorcher. We had people walking around in wool period costumes. There wasn’t a lot of fall in the fall fair, so we’re trying out an October date.”

The fair will be held at the Sands Willets House in Port Washington from 10 a.m to 5 p.m.

Shaw said she was most excited for guests to see the renovated Colonial garden, which was only in the planning stages during last year’s fair. The garden is almost completed and will feature plants used for medicine, cooking and bee and butterfly section.

“A lot of the plants are already in and the head of our gardening committee will have presentations on planting,” she said.

There will be a variety of activities, such as a petting zoo, pony rides, Colonial-era games, face-painting, story time, a firetruck to explore, drawing and a variety of crafts.

“While the fair is extremely kid-friendly, there is plenty do to for those who don’t have kids,” Shaw said.

Among those activities geared toward adults are antiques, raffles, history exhibits vendors selling honey and antique cars. There will be vendors selling jewelry, pottery and glassware.

There will also be live performances, including the Quatrain Barbershop Quartet, who made their county fair debut last year and whom Shaw said she was excited to have return.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12 and admission is free for children under 6. In the event of rain, the fair will be held on Sunday, Oct. 15.
