The Manhasset Memorial Day parade, hosted by American Legion Post 304, will return Monday with familiar floats down Plandome Road and festivities to follow at Manhasset Secondary School.

The event will kick off on Plandome Road at 10 a.m.

“What I’m excited about is just getting the community out and getting them to honor those people who have passed away in the wars we’ve been involved in,” said Peter Cogan, American Legion Post 304’s company historian, who is a veteran of the Air Force.

Bands participating include the New York City Police Department’s Emerald Society, the Manhasset High School band and the Inis Fada Gaelic Pipe Band, said Post 304 Vice Commander James Brooks.

Local fire departments, scout troops and sports teams will also be there.

After the parade, the event will head into the high school auditorium where local religious officials will speak and the American Legion post will present awards to high school students. It will also announce the names of individuals selected to attend Boys State and Girls State, weeklong summer programs organized by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary that allow young people to simulate holding positions as government officials.

Post 304 has held the Manhasset Memorial Day parade since World War II.

“We like to see the community come out,” Brooks said. “It’s something we look forward to every year.”
