A new parking lot on Locust Street in Manhasset opened for commuters March 1, offering 15 spaces for Manhasset Park District residents.

Parking in the new lot, located at 61 Locust St., costs $3 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, the park district’s board of commissioners said. It is only available for district residents with park district permits.

Residents with permits can park there for free after 6 p.m. and on weekends.

The new spaces are the latest out of a total of 32 that the Manhasset Park District has introduced in the past eight months.

“The Park District continues to hear that there is not enough parking,” Commissioners Mark Sauvigne, David Paterson and Ken Weigand wrote in an email. “The commissioners continue to look for opportunities to provide more spots, maintain a low daily cost, keep the lots clean and maintain the flow of traffic.”

The parking lot on Locust Street was previously leased to town merchants, and the district was able to relocate merchants assigned to it to other lots, the commissioners said.

Feedback on the 17 spaces previously added has been positive, they said.

The district would not provide details on any other commuter lots in the works.

However, additional parking for commuters and shoppers remains a priority, it said, along with shuttering private commuter lots operating illegally.
