Readers Write: Nanette Melkonian prepared to serve on Port Washington school board

The Island Now

A candidate for school board trustee should be able to cultivate a culture of support and success in the community by serving as a leader and as a representative who builds open, respectful communication with all stakeholders, and who advocates for the students and the school district.

Because she has demonstrated all of these attributes in her service to the community, we will be voting for Nanette Melkonian for school board trustee.

In her leadership roles as an educator, home-school association member and officer including service on several Compact Committees and one Parent’s Council, and as an advocate for students in education-related issues including as a founder of Port Washington Advocates for Public Education, as a member of the district’s Vision and Mission committee, and in her three years as co-president of AGATE, Nanette has demonstrated an ability to establish a strategic vision by synthesizing ideas and building consensus around shared values and to prioritize and achieve goals in support of that vision.

She has been a tireless advocate for the needs of students, a staunch supporter of educators, programming and professional development to sustain that programming and a team builder who has taken on difficult work and led by example.

Nanette is aware of federal, state and local policies and regulations that impact the work of a school district, she knows how to align a school budget with a strategic vision, but above all else she understands the position of trust and responsibility with which public school trustees are endowed.

She will be an outstanding trustee for the Port Washington schools.
