Two dead in Long Island Expressway crash

Two people died Thursday when a pickup truck they were driving rear-ended a tractor-trailer and the vehicle ignited, trapping them inside and killing them.

The accident occurred in the vicinity of Exit 34, according to the police.

The victim’s identities are “pending as the investigation continues,” police said.

The fire was extinguished and their remains were transported to the medical examiner’s office. No other injuries were reported.

Officials said it is unknown what caused the truck to ignite and that more information will be released as it becomes known.

Nassau County Police Department homicide squad responded to the accident along with the county fire marshal around 3:00 p.m. Thursday.
