Manorhaven Elementary School recently earned first place in Nassau County for the 5th Annual New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (APHERD) Get Moving Video Contest.

Manorhaven’s health and physical education teachers—also current members of AHPERD—worked with students to develop and submit a video that showcases building initiatives for students to “get moving” during gym class. The video features different exercises and programs implemented throughout the district’s elementary level incorporating state Learning Standards for Health and Physical Education: personal health and fitness and a safe and healthy environment. The video also shows students utilizing community resources and practicing healthy lifestyles.

Videos were required to follow a 10-component rubric: “Show us Your Healthy Lifestyle” theme, connection to state learning standards for health and physical education, enthusiasm of participants, reference to AHPERD, creativity, title and credits, quality of video, quality of audio, use of music and elements of video.

Judging for this year’s contest at the Nassau County Zone level was facilitated by Nassau County’s AHPERD Zone Board. For each criterion, videos were given either 0, 1, 2, or 3 points—3 being a perfect score. AHPERD awarded $2,000 worth of Flaghouse physical orientation equipment to Manorhaven for earning first place.
