Mathnasium opening Mineola location

Since opening a Mathnasium tutoring location in New Hyde Park, Peter Abrams has watched the business flourish.

“We originally planned on opening a new location back in July 2017,” Abrams said. “We’ve seen a ton of success but there were a lot of moving parts, moving people and it’s been delayed quite a while.”

On Monday, Abrams opened a second Mathnasium location at 41 Mineola Blvd. in Mineola.

Mathnasium is a franchise of math-centric tutoring centers focused on not only improving the skills of children who are struggling, but building upon the success that children who already love math are making. It tutors students ranging from first to 12th grade.

“I looked at a lot of franchises and nothing really jumped out at me,” Abrams said. “But then I found Mathnasium, I checked the criteria for a franchise and it was completely plausible.”

“I even looked into different tutoring franchises. I wasn’t very interested in the English ones or some of the other math-focused types. There weren’t any deep-seated explanations being made.”

Mathnasium currently has over 800 locations across the United States and nine more internationally, according to its website.

Mathnasium focuses on trying to help with children’s foundational education, Abrams said. Something he has noticed since 2012 and what he hopes to continue seeing is the difference Mathnasium brings to tutoring.

“A lot of the time when you walk into these tutoring sites,” Abrams said, “you don’t see kids that look like they want to be there.”

“When we’re here working with the kids, they’re all having fun and are really engaged in what they’re doing. I never thought it could be like this, but I really love it.”

Abrams decided to open the first Mathnasium location after resigning from a position as a controller for an architecture company.

“I didn’t think I was contributing anything,” Abrams. “I wanted to start to give back to the community.”

Abrams’ brother-in-law, Mitchell Stein, is now center director for the New Hyde Park location at 810 Jericho Turnpike, as Abrams is prepared to assume that role at the new Mathnasium.

Before his work with that company, Abrams was an insurance premium auditor and even earlier an accountant. Math felt natural for him. Deciding to leave all those jobs behind, he searched for a more fulfilling full-time position.

He found one in the form of two things he loves.

“Mathnasium came naturally to me,” Abrams said. “I love math and i love kids.”
