County Legislator Joshua Lafazan’s campaign has announced his first batch of endorsements from Long Island mayors in the 3rd Congressional District race.
The mayors of North Hills and Old Westbury, Marvin Natiss and Edward Novick, joined 10 others in endorsing Lafazan (D-Woodbury).
Others who endorsed him included Mayors Elliot Conway of Upper Brookville, Robert De Natale of Bayville, Ralph Ekstrand of Farmingdale, Robert Fagiola of Lattingtown, Kenneth Goodman of Matinecock, Charles Goulding of Oyster Bay Cove, James Liguori of Muttontown, Lawrence Schmidlapp of Centre Island and Daniel Serota of Brookville, and former Mayor Edward Lieberman of Sea Cliff.
“I’m so humbled and honored to have the support of so many trusted and respected leaders,” Lafazan said in a statement. “They are out in their communities and they know firsthand what Long Islanders need when it comes to representation in Washington.
“Their constituents are looking for someone who can hit the ground running and bring a new set of fresh ideas and a different perspective to the way we have been doing things for a long time. These mayors trust me with their votes and I look forward to working with them to make Long Island a better place to live for everyone when I get to Congress.”
Since announcing his candidacy over a month ago, Lafazan has raised over $450,000. If elected, Lafazan would become the youngest member of the Democratic caucus in the House of Representatives.
The 3rd Congressional District covers the North Shore from Queens to Suffolk County but could change slightly due to redistricting. The seat is being vacated by Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) as he runs for governor.
At 23 years of age, Lafazan became Nassau County’s youngest-ever legislator upon his election to the Nassau County Legislature in November 2017. In previous elections, Lafazan ran as an independent who caucused with the Democrats. He has since re-enrolled as a Democrat for his congressional run.
Also running for the Democratic nomination in the district are Robert Zimmerman of Great Neck, Melanie D’Arrigo of Port Washington, Reema Rasool of Oyster Bay and former North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman of Great Neck.
George Santos, an economist, is seeking the Republican nomination.
