Nassau County police arrested a Mineola man after he allegedly tried to steal the register at a Hempstead Taco Bell on Saturday at 12:55 a.m., according to police.

The man, Francis Ellis, 58 of Russel Drive, allegedly got out of his car at the drive thru, lunged into the window and grabbed the drive thru attendant, police said.

After allegedly failing to steal the cash register, Ellis got back into his car and fled from the Taco Bell, located at 490 Peninsula Boulevard, police said.

At 1:30 a.m., Ellis was pulled over for a traffic infraction, police said.

During the arrest process detectives recognized Ellis as the man allegedly involved in the attempted Taco Bell theft, police said.

Police said Ellis was also found to be wanted for an unrelated domestic grand larceny incident.

Ellis is charged with third degree burglary, third degree attempted robbery, third degree grand larceny and two vehicle and traffic law violations.

During two separate arraignments on Sunday, Judge Paul Meli adjourned Ellis’ cases. He is held on $15,000 and $25,000 bail.

He is due back in court on Wednesday.
