Mineola High School senior Bethany Shatz has been named a Merit Award winner in the Long Island Scholar Artist program for the 2021-2022 school year. Shatz is one of nine students to be honored in the visual arts category.

The Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday sponsors the program each year, honoring up to 40 high school seniors from Nassau and Suffolk counties in the fields of dance, media arts, music, theater and visual arts. Districts can nominate students who are exceptionally accomplished in their field and hold an unweighted GPA of 90 or above. Nominated students are then asked to submit a portfolio of their work and an essay to be reviewed before being selected.

The award for the top 20 students selected is the Scholar Artist designation and the remaining 20 students receive an Award of Merit.
