Seventh-grade students at Mineola Middle School participated in the National History Day Competition. Students were challenged to find topics to research, synthesize and create a project around the theme, “Communication in History.” Three projects are moving onto the New York state round of the competition.
Congratulations to the following students:
- Individual Website Junior Division (3rd place) – Julianna Reilly, The Fireside Chats – Sparking a New Era in Radio
- Virtual Exhibit Junior Division (5th place) – Amanda Calles, 2nd Wave Feminism: Betty Friedan’s Mystique Inspires
- Individual Performance Junior Division (5th place) – Aiden Rosales, Railroad to Success: The Secret Codes to Freedom
Four other projects from Mineola were also honored with special awards:
- Outstanding Junior Entry on Aviation or Military History – Luca Bernardes, James Condon, Harrison Kearns and Justin Spera “Code-Breaking for Midway Atoll” (documentary)
- Outstanding Junior Entry on Genocide, Bias or Tragedy – Gabby Parrado “Catch Me If You Can: Jack the Ripper Letters Ensure No Criminals Go Uncaught” (virtual exhibit)
- Outstanding Junior Entry on Science History – Kaela Lui “From Code-Breaking to the Computer: Dr. Alan Turing’s Bombe Machine” (individual website)
- Outstanding Junior Entry on Language – Camila Garabato “Old Norse: from the Vikings to our English” (documentary)
This marks the third year of Mineola’s participation in the competition. The district is #MineolaProud of its students who moved onto the state finals and for being stewards of history!
