Two teams from Mineola Middle School, one made up of fifth-graders and the other made up of sixth-graders, placed in the Top 10 of the 2021 Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. The Rube Goldberg Machine Contest challenges students from all over the world with creating complicated machines that perform simple tasks.

This year, the competition was sponsored by Nerds. Students had to create a machine that was able to shake and pour a box of candy.

This was the first year that the Rube Goldberg Contest was virtual. Mineola teams first learned about machines before building their own. Each team uploaded two videos of their machine shaking and pouring a box of Nerds. They also had to submit a website they developed to be evaluated by more than 50 judges.

The fifth-grade team from Mineola Middle School also won the People’s Choice Award in Division 1 for getting the most online votes from the public. This marks the seventh year Mineola Middle School has participated in the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest.
