The Village of Mineola Board of Trustees suspended parking regulations in both residential and commercial areas at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March. This included alternate side parking and time limits on certain parking spaces in the village.
This decision was made to help alleviate some of the stress that was induced by the pandemic.
“We relaxed everything because everyone was home, it just helped everybody out,” Village of Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss said.
The village did not cease enforcing parking rules in areas that could cause safety problems such as cars parked in front of fire hydrants or in handicaps spaces.
At Wednesday’s meeting of the board of trustees, the first to be held at Village Hall since the start of the pandemic, Strauss announced that some of those regulations are being enforced again.
Last week the village began enforcing metered spaces again but the restrictions around alternate side parking in residential areas will remain suspended until further notice.
The village created 50 spaces in front of restaurants where patrons can park for up to 15 minutes in order to pick up food. This was done as a courtesy to restaurants in the village that are still barred from seating customers indoors under governor Cuomo’s pandemic restrictions.
