Dr. Alan Mazurek, a Great Neck resident and neurologist at Mount Sinai, was honored for his efforts to fight Alzheimer’s disease by the Long Island chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association at its annual A Night to Remember Gala at the Crest Hollow Country Club last month.
Mazurek, a physician and neurologist, has served as the chairman of the Alzheimer’s Association’s medical advisory committee, where he tries to get more doctors involved in proactively fighting the brain disease.
More than 5.7 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive and fatal disease characterized by cognitive decline and memory loss. In New York, around 400,000 people have the disease.
“I try to get other physicians, not just neurologists, involved on a practical level,” Mazurek, an assistant clinical professor of neurology at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, said in a previous interview.
He has participated in many of the association’s outreach programs, published research in a number of medical journals and recently hosted the Med/Sci Symposium on June 5 to try bringing scientists together to try move closer toward a cure for Alzheimer’s.
Among its guests were Dr. Maria Torroella Carney, the chief of Northwell Health’s division of geriatrics and palliative medicine in Great Neck, and Dr. Nikhail Palekar, the director of geriatric psychiatry at Stony Brook University Medical Center and the medical director of the Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease.
“These annual Med/Sci events are designed to bring together local community physicians and researchers, to share new information on Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis and treatment and ultimately help find the elusive cure to this dreaded disease,” Mazurek said.
Douglas Davidson, the executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island chapter, described the annual gala, which raises funds for care, support and research pertaining to Alzheimer’s disease, as “always a special night” and said he was pleased to highlight Dr. Mazurek.
“The gala, in its fourth year, brings Long Islanders together to celebrate the lives of those impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia,” Davidson said. “Dr. Mazurek is a tremendous asset to the association and we are grateful to get the chance to honor him this way.”
Other honorees included board member Robert Mayer, the chief revenue officer at Prager Metis CPAs, and John Romano, the senior vice president of Dime Community Bank.
