New Hyde Park Memorial High School was recognized by the Junior Achievement Organization of New York as the Long Island School of the Year for 2017.
Junior Achievement of New York is the local affiliate of Junior Achievement USA, the nation’s largest organization dedicated to providing students with work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy education to encourage and empower young people to own their economic success.
New Hyde Park Memorial has worked side by side with JA for the past six years, linking business education, the Future Business Leaders of America club and the Academy of Finance program to JA’s many experiences and opportunities.
Last school year, New Hyde Park business and FBLA students participated in JA’s High School Heroes Program, a job shadow experience at the Microsoft Store at the Walt Whitman Mall, the 2017 National Grid/Junior Achievement Women’s Leadership Conference, Mobile Finance Park and a business education day with the accounting firm MWE.
One of New Hyde Park’s favorite activities to participate in is the JA New York Business Plan Competition. There is a semester long preparation in which the Academy of Finance seniors prepare business plans and present them as the culminating activity of their four years in the academy.
“It’s very fulfilling to see students apply what they have learned in the Academy to a real-life business plan,” said Zoe DelVecchio, facilitator of the business plan competition. “This is one of my most rewarding experiences as a teacher in the Academy of Finance Program.”
